I took this photograph in Tanzania. The Maasai are a Nilotic ethnic group in Kenya and Tanzania. They are among the best known local populations due to their distinctive customs and dress. The Tanzanian and Kenyan governments have instituted programs to encourage the Maasai to abandon their traditional semi-nomadic lifestyle, but the people have continued their customs. They are considered one of the tallest people in the world, with an average height of 6 ft 3 inches according to some reports. This Maasai woman is standing in front of her family home. That’s her grandson standing in the doorway. They live in that small village of huts like this arranged in a circle. There’s no electricity, machines, vehicles. They farm and raise cows in far flung fields.
